Salt has many traditional old shops as well as an old working market in Hamam Street, where you can buy a good selection of local produce as well as herbs and spices. The yellow sandstone buildings along this street are around 100 years old but the ambiance of the street has hardly changed for centuries.

Salt also has many artisans’ workshops where you can watch local craftsmen and women making anything from shoes to household furniture. Look out for small shops selling antiques and jewellery.

Salt Handicrafts Training Centre is a vocational school for young artisans who receive expert instruction in weaving and ceramics. The Centre’s shop, located in the heart of the old town of Salt, makes the project self-financing.

Established in 1987 by the Salt Development Cooperation and the Italian government, the Salt Handicrafts Training Center (SHTC) is dedicated to the development of a new generation of skilled Jordanian craftspeople and trainers. Recently, the SHTC was turned over to the National Vocational Corporation, in line with the government initiatives to enhance vocational training in Jordan.
